In 2009, the Uk government started the scrappage scheme, in which you were given £2000 for your old car towards a new one. I personally think it was a huge waste of money that did nothing but send still roadworthy cars to the scrapyard and put Hyundai i10s in their place, as do most car enthusiasts. The scheme also took quite a few interesting and now valuable cars, some of which ended up being stored on a disused airfield (pictured above). Now, more than seven years after the scheme was started, it looks like somebody has finally decided to do something about the cars there, and is breaking them for spares. I don’t have a clue which, or how many of the cars are getting broken, but I’ve never seen the photos in the ad before, and they seem to be the same cars that have been photographed in the past. I’m tempted to get in touch and see what stuff they have that might be useful for me to get for my own mini...

I thought the problem was that the actual cars couldn’t be put back on the road where as the parts were up for grabs.

The US had a program like that that was ostensibly to get more fuel-efficient vehicles on the road.

Yep. That was the idea as far as I know. The cars were given a certificate of destruction so they wouldn’t end up back on the road, then a lot were broken up for parts. However, some did end up just sat on an airfield for years - somebody took some photos of them all earlier this year I think, and it angered quite a few people, as most of the cars that were kept there were pretty valuable/rare, and instead of being used for anything, they were just left to rot and deteriorate, meaning that as time went on, less and less of the spares on them would actually be useful for anything

Cash for clunkers? Yeah, this was pretty much the same idea as that - about the same time, too, iirc

If those Minis have really stood in the open for seven years, they’re in a remarkably good state. They rust quickly enough in the normal course of events.

“Ostensibly” is the key word in both cases.

I thought the same - how can they possibly have held up that well? I’m seriously tempted to email them about parts

The UK is an odd place. Look at this (same seller):
These Corsas aren’t old nor crashed, they’re not horribly unreliable and they’re not impopular used. So why are all these cars junked? Makes absolutely no sense to me.

Screw those Minis. That’s a 205 GTi there. Blasphemers!
